Can't wait to root for the quakes in their new stadium:

“I don’t think there’s really any professional soccer venue that has a setup like this,” Quakes president David Kaval told MLSsoccer.com. “It’s a really cool design and we’re really happy to have it at the new venue.”

Recap: Keane, Galaxy with familiar result in Indonesia

LA open Asia Pacific Tour with 1-0 win in Indonesia

The Galaxy got their Asia Pacific Tour off to a rousing success with a 1-0 win over the Indonesia Selection on Wednesday night at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta. Playing in his first-ever friendly as a member of the Galaxy, Robbie Keane scored the game’s only goal in the 14th minute to give the Galaxy the win. The team will head to the Philippines on Thursday for the second game of their tour, which will conclude in Melbourne, Australia on December 6.

Playing in front of a loud and passionate set of supporters the Indonesian team came out flying, sending wave after wave of attack forward at the Galaxy, only to be let down by their finishing or to have a Galaxy defender intervene at the final moment.

At the other end of the field, David Beckham threatened with a freekick and Robbie Keane went close inside the opening 10 minutes before Keane put his team in front in the 14th minute. A cross from Mike Magee was only half cleared by the Indonesia defense, allowing Adam Cristman to knock the ball down into the path of Keane, who hit a low shot just inside the right post to make the score 1-0.

WATCH: Full Match Highlights

Juninho nearly made the score 2-0 minutes later when he tried to catch the Indonesia goalkeeper off his line with a volley from midfield, only to see his effort head narrowly wide of the goal. However, that would be one of Juninho’s final involvements in the game as he was forced to come off in the 31st minute because of an injury that he sustained in a sliding collision with the Indonesian goalkeeper after Keane had played him through. He was replaced by Michael Stephens.

Late in the half the Galaxy looked to extend their lead with Sean Franklin going close. Minutes later, Franklin was through again off a feed from Adam Cristman, only for his shot to carom off the post. The rebound fell to Cristman, but his first time shot from the center of the box crashed off the under side of the crossbar before being cleared from danger.

Both teams made multiple changes at the half with the Galaxy bringing on Brian Perk in goal, Frankie Hejduk, Dasan Robinson and Bryan Jordan in defense, Paolo Cardozo in midfield and Miguel Lopez up front.

Of that group, Frankie Hejduk was perhaps the unlikeliest of those to get on the scoresheet, but he nearly did just that just five minutes after the break, volleying a Beckham freekick just wide of the goal from a tight angle. The fresh legs would keep up the pressure for LA with Bryan Jordan providing a perfect low cross for Miguel Lopez, only to see his close range re-direction rebound off the post, though he was whistled for offside.

With his final chance of the game, David Beckham curled a freekick just over the bar before being replaced by Dan Keat to a thunderous applause from the 30,000 fans that were in attendance.

Indonesia pushed for a late equalizer, but they were unable to fins a way past Brian Perk, having a series of shots blocked or pushed just wide in the final 10 minutes, leaving the Galaxy with a 1-0 win to start Asia Pacific Tour 2011.

Fulham star Clint Dempsey will have more reason than most to celebrate his late winner against Liverpool on Monday night, as it set a Premier League record.

The USA international became the highest scoring American player in Premier League history, after he knocked in his 85th minute goal.

The forward took advantage of a mistake by Reds goalkeeper Pepe Reina to score his 37th goal for Fulham, topping former Cottagers striker Brian McBride's previous tally of 36 goals. The goal was Dempsey's sixth of the season.

The win takes Fulham up to 13th in the Premier League standings.

I thought McBride scored 41 goals for Fulham? Just goes to show how much of a beast Brian McBride was.

Barca foils Real Madrid yet again

HunterBy Graham Hunter

Alexis SanchezJavier Soriano/Getty ImagesReal Madrid was the slight favorite to win the Clasico, but Barcelona ended up winning 3-1 at the Bernabeu.

MADRID -- For all that this was a classic Clasico, the most pure-blooded of Spanish football matches, it put me in mind of that golden era of boxing when Muhammad Ali and the late, great Joe Frazier were going after each other. Frazier was a stunning competitor at his peak -- power and aggression and an infernal need to win. Ali was the stylist -- quick of mind and paw and feet and tongue.

Of course, it got personal. And I swear that as well as driving Frazier mad with rage, Ali's taunting of his rival, whom he secretly both feared and respected, reached a stage where he threatened to "whop" Smokin' Joe with one hand tied behind his back.

The Barca versus Real Madrid rivalry has always been that charged, that electric, that animated. But right now, Pep Guardiola's team is Ali and Madrid, Frazier.

Whether Barca resolved to fight with one hand behind their back by conceding a comedy goal (comic unless you are Victor Valdes or Guardiola) within seconds of the kickoff as the Bernabeu bayed for Catalan blood and payback for the 5-0 that Los Merengues had to suffer last year, we might never know. But to then soak up the pressure, utterly turn the tide, score three goals and threaten three or four more might just be more satisfying for Guardiola and his men than winning 5-0 at their will last November.

Make no mistake about it. This could have been 6-2 or 7-2. Had the Spanish and European champions added goals from Andres Iniesta, Xavi or David Villa, there would have been no ground for complaint from their enemies.

[+] EnlargeCesc Fabregas
Jasper Juinen/Getty ImagesCesc Fabregas, here going one-on-one with Angel Di Maria, scored Barcelona's third and final goal with a diving header.

If you will permit me to change the metaphor from boxing to the movies, Barca, at least for Madrid, are like the villain the good guy has just about shaken off. We know there are only six or seven minutes left in the movie, but the director is telling us with his camera that the bad guy isn't really dead, just hiding behind the door, and that there are at least four more minutes of fight scenes left. Think Glenn Close, "Fatal Attraction," the bath, the knife and Anne Archer. Whenever Madrid thinks it has Barca on the ropes, it is wrong and its audience is screaming, "They aren't dead yet, deal with them, deal with them!"

Up one-nil here Saturday but still slaughtered. Up one-nil in the game that ended 6-2 in Barca's favor during Guardiola's first, glorious, season in charge. A one-nil victory in the Cup final this past April but beaten 2-0 at home in the Champions League semifinal a week later. Madrid simply can't produce a knockout blow.

When Xavi strolled off the pitch Saturday night, and he'd have had every right to have been smoking a cigar, he stopped to point out that "despite our early mistake, which was our fault, we were totally superior to them in all areas of the pitch. This was a fantastic performance by the lads."

The key

Madrid, quite correctly, has sussed that if you can press Barcelona adequately, which means harassing Guardiola's players when they try to move the ball in areas where they are vulnerable, it's possible to hustle the Emperors right out of their groove.

Pressing was the key to Valdes' early mistake that allowed Angel Di Maria to have the ball delivered right to his feet and then for Karim Benzema to benefit from the deflected shot to score at 23 seconds, the fastest goal in the history of the Clasico.

During the minutes when Barcelona passed its way back into contention, Madrid attempted to make Valdes repeat his error, tried to test whether Gerard Pique and Carles Puyol are fully fit and sharp. And above all, Jose Mourinho's men tried to catch Xavi taking a little more time on the ball than he should.

Twice in recent Clasicos, Real Madrid has done that to Xavi and earned a goal -- in the Liga 1-all draw in April and the Champions League semifinal second leg in May.

[+] EnlargeAndres Iniesta, Fabio Alexander
Pierre-Philippe Marcou 111210Andres Iniesta had another extraordinary game for Barcelona.

But pressing is an art. Some in Madrid's squad are fit enough for it but not bright enough for it. It's a high-wire act. Anyone can stand on the tightrope, balance with the pole and bend his feet around the taut metal rope. But can you make it to the other side without falling down once you've made it half way? Can you resist the urge to look down? In terms of pressing, these were the tests Madrid failed.

Barcelona's clever players found space, passed, tugged the white shirts around into bad spaces and then, as Ali was wont to do when a slugger was tired, just picked them off -- which can be brutal in its own pretty way.

Main man

Lionel Messi, of course. Six goals and four assists in the previous seven Clasicos coming into this game, he produced a fifth assist by picking the ball up in his own half, sprinting away from Mesut Ozil, and dancing between Lass Diarra and Xabi Alonso before releasing a pass, just in time, to set Alexis Sanchez up for the vital equalizer.

Messi is the touchstone for the Barcelona players. If he is confident and quick and happy in his work, they genuinely don't believe they can lose. He turned the tide; he is dangerous enough for Mourinho and his performing puppets to jump up and demand a second yellow for a tackle that was barely a foul when, again, both Sergio Ramos and Pepe did very well to stay on for single tackles that some referees would have judged as straight reds.

Guardiola vs. Mourinho

It didn't really appear as if a new page was being turned before the match. Mourinho waited patiently at the mouth of the tunnel for a decent while after the teams were out so he could shake hands with Guardiola and assistant coach Tito Vilanova. Eventually he did press the flesh with the Barca coach but, for a moment, it looked like Guardiola was simply leaving his old foe hanging.

Kudos to Mourinho for going back to the bench and warmly shaking Vilanova's hand. The horrible incident in which he poked at Vilanova's eye in the Super Cup second leg needed to be put aside so the return to health from a delicate operation on the Barcelona assistant coach's saliva gland could be celebrated. Hats off to the "Special One" for that.

But Mourinho was undone, again, by his rival. Although it took time, Guardiola's option for extra bodies in midfield and his odd idea that Cesc Fabregas should play on the wing actually paid off. It was not an out-and-out success, but Fabregas' back-post header for 3-1 is what history will recall.

Prior to that, Barca's evident domination of the ball, better positional sense around the pitch and confidence in each other had brought a deflected goal for Xavi to make it 2-1. But, frankly, immediately after Alexis made it 1-all, there looked to be only one winner.

What next?

Now Barcelona heads for Japan and the chance to become world champions at FIFA Club World Cup once again, probably against Santos in a tantalizing final.

Madrid heads for the drawing board. There is nothing wrong with its playing style; there is nothing wrong with the sharpness and ability of some of its players. However, there are flaws, and there are some who rely on force rather than brains and technique. Until they learn to play at Barcelona's level without resorting to brute force, they will be unable to consistently get the better of this superb footballing outfit.

^ Thyroid disease? Yea, I heard about that. I always thought it was called being rich and lazy.

Dude was always partying and staying at the beach when he originally got fat, but I guess it will make all the Ronaldo fans feel better to blame his laziness on a disease.

It's true
Look at Magic Johnson dude hasn't played in how long? and he doesn't have a gut like that.

Magic has gained weight throughout the years we can clearly see it.

Getting a gut like that is not just from being lazy and partying especially since he was playing last year still how would that be possible?Confused

^ You're delusional dude.

He was one of my favorite players too, but I'm not going to sit here and pretend like dude wasn't out partying and caring less about soccer when he made it big.

You need to accept the fact that he was a lazy ass player half way into his career.

Galaxy agree to loan Donovan to Everton

By Martin Rogers, Dec 16, 2:27 am EST

Landon Donovan’s latest loan move from the Los Angeles Galaxy to Everton was put together in urgent fashion as the English Premier League club seeks to avoid an $80 million relegation nightmare.

Once the transfer window reopens at the start of January, Donovan will return to the team where he spent three successful months in 2010. He is expected to play eight games in England before rejoining the Galaxy for the 2012 Major League Soccer season.

Despite the previous links with the United States international, a fresh loan move had not been seriously discussed by Everton boss David Moyes, Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena, or Donovan himself.

However, a run of poor form, a string of untimely injuries, and Everton’s restrictive budget limitations combined to convince Moyes that action was necessary if the team was to avoid getting drawn into a relegation fight.

It is estimated that losing a place in the EPL can cost a team around $80 million, a fate Everton never has suffered since the inception of the league in 1992.

Everton reached out to the Galaxy at the start of the week and it did not take long for all parties to agree to a loan. Donovan was keen to head back to England, where he played 13 games two years ago and established himself as a firm favorite among Everton fans.

Likewise, Arena quickly agreed to the move on the condition that Donovan would be back in time for Galaxy’s preseason training camp in early March.

Everton is in 12th place in the 20-team EPL but is just four points above the relegation zone and has won only five games all season. Its upcoming run of fixtures is daunting, with Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester City all coming up in January.

Donovan’s final game will be Everton’s Merseyside derby against local rival Liverpool, a clash that rarely fails to provide excitement and fireworks.

The move will go some way to appeasing critics of Donovan, who have attacked him for remaining in the United States and MLS instead of testing himself in one of the world’s biggest leagues.

Former USA goalkeeper Brad Frieidel hit out at Donovan only last week, insisting that Clint Dempsey’s commitment to playing in England meant he was more deserving of credit.

“You get a player like a Landon Donovan, who in my opinion chose to take the easy road and stay in the States. It’s much harder to ply your trade over here,” Friedel told the BBC. “(The Premier League) is the best league in the world to play in, and this is where (Dempsey) got better in my opinion. This is where he became one of the best the United States ever produced.

“The profiling in the States sometimes is a lot more to do with sponsorships than what you actually do on the field. And listen, I’m not trying to take anything away from Landon because Landon has been absolutely magnificent for the U.S. as well. I’m just saying he gets a lot more notoriety because it’s sponsorship-driven over there.”

There will still be many who would like to see Donovan move to Europe full time, but that is increasingly unlikely now. The Galaxy is believed to have turned down an offer from Everton following the World Cup last year, and while the club is happy to let one of its main stars leave temporarily, it is hard to imagine them sanctioning a permanent transfer.

USA striker makes Liverpool trial impact

Agudelo enjoyed his time with the Reds. (©GettyImages)

By Mark Bollons givemefootball.com, Fri 16 December 2011 11.08

USA international striker Juan Agudelo was left in awe after his trial experience with Liverpool.

The 19-year-old New York Red Bulls striker already has 15-caps to his name for Jürgen Klinsmann's national team, but got his first taste of European football during brief spells with Stuttgart and the Reds in recent weeks.

It's an experience which has left a lasting mark on the teenager, who cited Luis Suarez as a player who stood out on the Anfield training ground during the trial.

Veteran Liverpool defenders Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger also made their mark on the talented forward, who admitted that were difficult to get past even on the training ground.

"Suarez really stood out, and the two center backs, Skrtel and Agger, were unbelievable with their speed and strength," he said on the Liverpool experience.

"It was hard to get around them."

The Red Bulls were delighted that one of their rising starlets got the chance to stay fit during the MLS off-season with a stint in Europe, whilst US coach Klinsmann was also eager for Agudelo to gain some invaluable experience.

"We're very pleased that Juan is staying fit and gaining tremendous experience training at the highest level at Stuttgart of the German Bundesliga and now Liverpool of the English Premiership," said NYRB sporting director Erik Solér before the trip.

"For such a young player, these stints are invaluable and we are eager to continue to track his development heading into the upcoming MLS season."

Whilst USA captain Landon Donovan joined Everton on-loan for two months yesterday, there has been no talk from Kenny Dalglish on Agudelo making a short-term move to Merseyside with Liverpool
